Map program for i-Pad or other electronic gizmos

A good map is essential for planning a successful trip.

Frankly, I approach new technology with the same anticipation as having a molar pulled. The iPad I have was a birthday gift and, at the time I opened it, I thought is was a joke. But, the other day, a buddy introduced me to a map program that will immeasurably help with planning road trips - especially to the back country.

I posted a little product review at: http://thechurchoftheopenroad.blogsp...ct-review.html

Re: Map program for i-Pad or other electronic gizmos

That's a cool little app (topomapsapp.com). I have it on my iPhone. It is possible to take it with you into the wilderness. Each quad can (should) be downloaded ahead of time, so you don't need an internet connection at the time you use it. Of course, you'd need a connection to use the GPS feature.

It's no replacement for a real map, though, IMHO. Maybe it would be better on an iPad; definitely on an iPhone you aren't be able to see enough of a map in enough detail to be able to navigate with it absent a GPS signal, especially if you're not on a marked trail/road.

Hey Dave... I used a Leroy Lettering set while in the military (engineer). I still have it. When I bring it out to show the kids they think I'm a dinosaur....I guess I am. Thank God for AutoCAD.
