Wiring my bike with USB to charge GPS, Phone, etc..
I'm putting a USB hub on my bike tomorrow, wiring the harness tonight.
I bought a 1 into 4 hub from radio shack, a inline fuse, +5v regulator today for roughly 20 bucks. Much more compact than those cigarette lighter thingies. So in theory I'll be able to mount the hub somewhere around the triple tree next to my gps mount and plug any USB capable device in. I work at a product design studio so with a little help I'm going to get my Blackjack phone and my Navigon talking to each other. Both are Windows CE, which means I should also be able to tie in the power commander and load new maps on the fly. (Had a fuel issue with my RC51 at high elevation last year that a different fuel map would have solved) I'll post my results and some photos of the build process tomorrow. |

Sonny, I look forward to your progress post on this project. I'm especially interested in the 5V regulator. Do you have a part # from Radio Shack?
Thanks!

Re: Wiring by bike with USB to charge GPS, Phone, etc..
Yep - part number: 276-1770
It's really a Fairchild 7805 LM. Max input is 35v - outputs a steady 5v DC. It's about a quarter of an inch square. I already have the harness wired up - I just need to hardwire the hub in. I could only find a hub with hardwired cable. Not ideal, but it will work. I have an older blackberry that I'm going to use to test. I looked up the USB pinout in google and tested with a test light - can't find my volt meter. I don't know where my tool kit is, I moved in July... never seem to find everything after a move. I'll update tomorrow. Thanks! |

Re: Wiring by bike with USB to charge GPS, Phone, etc..
I got the voltage wrong on the first attempt. Have to try again. I'm moving atthe end of the month to a place where I can work on my bikes so that will make it much easier.
I'll post an update. |
