Icon10 Pashnit Iron Butt Ride - Sept 2012

Been thinking about setting this up for awhile. Plan this far in advance for likely mid-September 2012 & take up a Pashnit Tour weekend slot. Organize a small group of riders with the goal being a 1000 mile day.

Here's my proposed route. Starting off in Carson City/Reno area. It's been years since I've ridden Hwy 50. One of the coolest places I've ever been - Loneliest Road in America. Perfect nothingness. Also perfect for an Iron Butt ride.

This is 18-19 hr day in the saddle, double back through Central Nevada on the Extraterrestrial Hwy through Rachel & along Area 51. This route is ~1030 miles, one day on the Hayabusa. Whatcha think?

That looks like a pretty good route, Tim. Any thoughts yet as to departure time? Sun at your back as much as possible, etc?

As you know so well, it can be time-consuming to "get the herd moving again", so a small and select group would be of great benefit I think...

Tim,

I like that idea, a iron butt in a small group would be cool. The route looks good.

I have no idea about the Busa, on the RT it shouldn't be any problem If you do this, you can count me in

Unless you leave at noon and ride at night, much of this ride will be into the sun. In that area, no fun in the morning, but after about 8 to 8:30 AM not so bad, coming back it, once the sun goes below the ridge line, not so bad.

Tim, some things to consider (which I am sure you are and which you have experience with doing your tours) is if someone breaks down or drops out (or that other thing I will not even type). I have done many sanctioned and non-sanctioned IBA events, personally I try to shy away from the group ones only because I just can't leave someone on the side of the road in the middle of no where. And as you are aware, those roads are all in the middle of BFN. If the pack spreads out, it could be a long time before someone noticed. (DAMHIK but I still feel guilty about the person that sat on the side of the road for almost 12 hours because no one knew she broke down - no, none of us finished the IBA run, but we did finally find her). It is a good route and good time can be made with little, if any, traffic.

I will keep an eye on the development. If it does not get to overwhelming with people, I may join you.

I am interested.
I've already done a SS1000 all in California.
These are roads that I haven't travelled yet, so, that would be interesting and that would make my second SS1000.

These are roads that I haven't travelled yet, so, that would be interesting plus it's all in Nevada so that would make my second SS1000 within a single state.
Nevada and Utah and ending in California, 3 states.

Tim, I to have done several LD rides even before I found IBA and since also.
I have to agree with Crash. (Damn hes just like my wife... Right most of the time.) One thing that could work would be a buddy system. Two riders responsible for each other and only each other. We start as a group and do our food/fuel stops as a group. BUT should anyone have a problem only his/her buddy will stop/stay with them should the problem take more than 10 or so min to diagnose/repair.

For what its worth... Just my two cents...

I may be interested. All will depend on work scene. Gotta join IBA to boot.

I think the buddy system idea is a great idea.

Re: Pashnit Iron Butt Ride - Sept 2012

Couple thoughts on this. And yes, I'm thinking outloud here. While this ride would be planned and built into out yearly tour schedule, the idea is not to organize a 'paid' guided tour.

Rather this it what I'm doing on a particular date, with a pre-planned route. If some one wants to join & ride along, let's limit it to 4-5 riders at best. You would have to be completely on your own, or with buddy. A mutual destination ride. It would not be a 'guided tour'. And only open to very experienced rriders. LD rides are not for beginners imo.
